Dyea Trail Hike and Float Tour
- Dauer: 4 Stunden (ca.)
- Produkt-Code: P1JIDO
Please note our regular itinerary of the moderate 2 mile one way hike on the Chilkoot Trail is not available for 2023 season due to trail damages from flooding in 2022. We hope to have our regular itinerary available again in 2024.
Begin in Skagway as we drive by van, 10 scenic coastal miles to the Dyea valley, which was a Gold Rush town, now returned to nature and part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Along the drive, watch for Bald Eagles and harbor seals. Your knowledgeable guide will share with you fascinating Gold Rush and natural history of the area as you drive to Dyea townsite and throughout the tour. The area, used by stampeeders at the start of their journey to the goldfields at Dawson City, was a thriving boomtown during the years of 1897-1898. There is much cultural history here in the valley, and before Gold Rush times was a native Tlingit seasonal fishing camp and staging area for valuable trade route on the Chilkoot Trail between the coast and the interior.
On the mostly flat hike, retrace the old town's streets through a green moss-covered northern temperate rainforest. There are few relics of the old settlement, but they give you a peek into the past. You will learn about the native flora and fauna as well and have time for taking photos.
After the walk, we drive toward the rafting put-in to and suit up with lifejackets and rubber boots for a relaxing river float on the tranquil Taiya River. As you float down the gentle glacial fed river, your guide will point out natural features and any wildlife (Bald Eagles are common, bears on rare occasion) while you relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the gorgeous river and mountain views. The river is a peaceful place to reflect on the natural beauty of Alaska. A granola bar is served riverside after the float.
This tour is approximately 4 hours including approx. 35-45 minutes on the river (depending on water levels). We operate tours in rainy weather so please dress in layers for your comfort and a waterproof rain jacket is suggested.
